If you are wondering about the silence lately by this blog, it is because I am still in the midst of exams and was also taken up by a new operating system (OS) from Linux which I have been playing around the past week on my laptop.
First off, I have already finished two papers and remaining with 2 more to go next week. After all this, the second semester will begin and I will prepare to end my course with another 4 subjects to do. Right now, I have a somewhat long break, which is providential, because it gives me ample time to revise, especially when the last two subjects are a little tougher to handle.
That brings me to the next point, in that I have also been busy with acquainting myself with a new OS that sits side-by-side with my current XP in the VAIO laptop. I
have to choose which OS to use every time I restart or boot up my laptop. I have been playing around with the latest release of the Linux-Ubuntu OS and so far I have been very impressed with its clean look, robust handling of the system, user and graphical interface and best of all, it is free! It does have its minor little incompatibilies, like say, with my in-build webcam where I have to run a separate little script file to 'chmod' the video file 'somewhere' to make it work. Apart from that, I could do just about everything I have been doing all this while on the XP system.
A word on the term 'free' as used and understood by Ubuntu in its philosophy. It says:
At the core of the Ubuntu Philosophy are these core philosophical ideals:
1. Every computer user should have the freedom to download, run, copy, distribute, study, share, change and improve their software for any purpose, without paying licensing fees.
2. Every computer user should be able to use their software in the language of their choice.
3. Every computer user should be given every opportunity to use software, even if they work under a disability.
I can't argue with that! This philosophy stands upon and carries a deeper understanding concerning the meaning of the word 'ubuntu' which is a Bantu language of southern Africa. The famous son of South Africa, Nelson Mandela explained it as such:
A traveller through a country would stop at a village and he didn't have to ask for food or for water. Once he stops, the people give him food, entertain him. That is one aspect of Ubuntu but it will have various aspects. Ubuntu does not mean that people should not address themselves. The question therefore is: Are you going to do so in order to enable the community around you to be able to improve?
Basically it is an ethic or humanist philosophy focusing on people's allegiances and relations with each other. Every time I use Ubuntu, I feel as if I am connected in a very special, mysterious way to a community that wants to improve the way we live our lives, and at no cost...

I agree with you, Father! This is a cool software and even an IT-klutz like me is suitably impressed. Hehe...
Of course, a more 'wired' society has its pros and cons but I prefer to count our blessings by saying that IT has narrowed the gap between people & made a lot of resources readily available without us having to seek out the archives section at libraries!
Your blog, in particular has touched many lives and brought about much enlightenment. As a newly-baptised, the sharing helps me keep my faith while maintaining my perspectives in a very down-to-earth and grounded way :0)
